Origin Species, CH Bennett, Courting man - frog
He would a-wooing go. Satire on Darwins Origin of Species showing the evolution of a rotund man, from a frog. Middle aged, swelled out of all proportion and adorned with the newest waistcoat and heavy watch-chain, with a flower in his buttonhole and curl in his hair. He is fat, complacent and happy...and has come courting! Its easy to see how he might have evolved from the frog, but alas the frogs fate is sealed by the duck (laid from the egg evolved from his hat) who consumes him (divorce, bankruptcy?). His wooing is at an end

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "Origin Species: CH Bennett, Courting Man - Frog," offers a whimsical take on the theory of evolution as proposed by Charles Darwin in his groundbreaking book, "On the Origin of Species." In this satirical depiction, we witness the evolution of a rotund man from a frog, complete with a middle age spread that has swelled him out of all proportion. The man is dressed in the latest fashion of the 1860s, donning a new waistcoat, heavy watch-chain, and adorned with a flower in his buttonhole and a curl in his hair. His complacent and happy demeanor exudes confidence as he goes courting. However, the joy of his wooing is short-lived as the ominous presence of a duck looms in the background. This duck, laid from the egg that evolved from his hat, signals the end of his romantic pursuits. The man's fate is sealed as the duck consumes him, perhaps symbolizing the harsh realities of life, such as divorce or bankruptcy. This print, created in the late 19th century, adds a humorous twist to the scientific theories of the time, highlighting the evolution of species while also poking fun at the social norms and expectations of the era. The image is a fascinating blend of history, satire, and evolution, making it a unique and intriguing addition to any collection.
