EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored etching, titled "Lachnolaimus maximus, or Hog-fish," is an exquisite illustration from The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands, Volume 2, published in 1731 by the renowned English naturalist Mark Catesby. The meticulously detailed image showcases the anatomy of this fascinating marine creature, which is identified as a hogfish, a type of bony fish belonging to the family Lutjanidae. The hogfish, with its distinctive brown coloration and elongated snout, is depicted in this illustration with remarkable accuracy. Its forehead is adorned with small, protruding scales, adding to its unique appearance. This fish is native to the Caribbean Sea and the western Atlantic Ocean, and its name derives from its snout, which resembles that of a hog. The hogfish is an important member of the Actinopterygii, or ray-finned fish, and the Eutheria, or mammal-like vertebrates. It is further classified as an Artiodactyl, or even-toed ungulate, although it is, of course, not an actual mammal. Instead, it is a member of the Epitheria, which includes all mammals and their extinct relatives. This hogfish illustration is a testament to the remarkable natural history observations and artistic skills of Mark Catesby and his team during their expedition to the New World in the early 18th century. The intricate details in the etching, from the fish's gills to its fins, provide a glimpse into the natural world of over three centuries ago and offer a fascinating insight into the diversity of marine life.
