Anthropology Attire Furs Lapland Laplanders Lapps Laps Norway Norwegian Sami Tent

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the 1910s, offers a glimpse into the traditional way of life of the Sami people in Norway during a bygone era. The Sami, also known as the Lapps or Laplanders, are an indigenous people inhabiting the Arctic regions of Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia. They have a rich cultural heritage, with their own unique language, customs, and folklore. The Sami people are renowned for their distinctive attire, which has been influenced by their harsh, cold climate and nomadic lifestyle. In this image, several Sami individuals are depicted wearing their traditional clothing. The women are dressed in long, colorful garments made of reindeer hides, adorned with intricate beadwork and embroidery. Their headgear, known as gákti, consists of a tall, conical hat covered in fur, which served both as insulation and protection against the elements. The men, on the other hand, are wearing simpler outfits, consisting of loose-fitting trousers and shirts made of reindeer hide. They are also seen wearing mukluks, traditional Sami footwear made of sealskin or reindeer hide, which provided warmth and insulation in the frigid conditions. The scene also reveals a Sami dwelling, a traditional tent known as a lavvu or goahti. These tents were easily portable and could be set up and taken down quickly, allowing the Sami people to follow their reindeer herds as they migrated throughout the year. The interior of the tent is furnished with reindeer hides and furs, providing warmth and comfort in the harsh Arctic climate. This photograph provides a fascinating window into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of the Sami people and their traditional way of life. It is a poignant reminder of the importance of preserving the cultural heritage and traditions of indigenous peoples, and the unique role they play in shaping the rich tapestry of human history.
