View of Darjeeling, West Bengal, India, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken from Darjeeling, West Bengal, India in 1904, offers a breathtaking view of the Himalayan landscape that once served as the backdrop to a little-known yet significant military campaign in Tibetan history. The image is taken from an intriguing album that has come down through the generations from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who was an Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to Colonel Francis Younghusband during the Tibet Expedition. Colonel Younghusband, a British military officer from the Indian Political Service, led the expedition, which was sanctioned by Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, due to growing concerns over Russian influence and perceived advances toward the border. The Tibet Expedition, as it came to be known, aimed to secure concessions from Tibet, which was nominally under Chinese control at the time. The photographs in this album provide a fascinating glimpse into the expedition, revealing various aspects of the military, monasteries, scenic landscapes, towns, and local inhabitants. The campaign, which began in December 1903 and concluded in October 1904, resulted in the signing of several treaties and agreements between Tibet and the British, but the question of whether the effort was worth the return remains a topic of debate. The Tibet Expedition marked a pivotal moment in the history of British-Tibetan relations, and this album offers a unique and personal perspective on the events that unfolded during that time. The image of Darjeeling captured in this photograph serves as a reminder of the rich history and cultural exchange that took place between India, Tibet, and the British Empire during the early 20th century.
