View of Chumbi village, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1904, offers a breathtaking view of Chumbi village, a crucial location during the little-known Tibet Expedition. The expedition was spearheaded by British forces under the leadership of Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, with the support of a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald. Launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, the expedition aimed to counteract perceived Russian influence and advancement towards the border. The album from which this photograph originates is a fascinating firsthand account of the campaign, revealing new details of the British military force's efforts to capture Lhasa. Tibet, then nominally under Chinese control, had long been a source of intrigue and strategic importance. The expedition eventually resulted in several concessions from Tibet, but the question of whether the endeavor was worth the return remains debatable. The album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to Colonel Younghusband, offers a unique glimpse into the expedition's various aspects. The photographs within the album showcase military encampments, monasteries, scenic landscapes, towns, and locals, providing a comprehensive record of this historic event. This photograph, in particular, showcases the stunning beauty of Chumbi village nestled amidst the rugged terrain. The image captures the village's vibrant colors, traditional architecture, and the peaceful coexistence of nature and human habitation. The photograph serves as a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of the region, offering a glimpse into a time long past.
