Roof of mission headquarters, nicknamed Changlo Manor, named after the noble Tibetan family who owned it, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, the roof of the Mission Headquarters, affectionately known as Changlo Manor, stands proudly against the backdrop of the Tibetan landscape. Named after the noble Tibetan family who once owned it, this building holds a significant place in history as a key site during the little-known British Tibet Expedition of 1904. Led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, the expedition was launched from India under the orders of Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, with the aim of countering Russian influence and supposed advances towards the border. The campaign resulted in the capture of Lhasa, the Tibetan capital, and the securing of various concessions from the Tibetan government, which was nominally under Chinese control at the time. This fascinating album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, an Aide-de-Camp to Colonel Younghusband, offers a unique insight into this intriguing chapter of history. The photographs within its pages depict a range of subjects, from military scenes and monasteries to breathtaking scenery, bustling towns, and local inhabitants. Captured in 1904, these images provide a captivating glimpse into a time when the British Empire extended its reach into the far corners of the world, and the mysterious land of Tibet became momentarily accessible to the outside world. The debate continues as to whether the Tibet Expedition was worth the return, but these photographs offer a valuable record of a pivotal moment in history.
