EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative collection of scraps, preserved in a leather-bound ledger, once belonged to Richard May, a passenger on the ill-fated RMS Titanic. The album, dating from the late 19th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of travel and transportation during this era. Although May only made it as far as Queenstown, Ireland, before the ship's tragic sinking, his album is a testament to the excitement and anticipation that surrounded ocean liner travel at the time. The pages of the ledger are filled with an eclectic assortment of ephemera. Early photographs capture the grandeur of the White Star Line's luxury ocean liner, while shipping letters provide insight into the logistics of travel by sea. Chinese paintings on rice paper and topographical photos offer glimpses of exotic locales, and menus, letterheads, and advertising cards offer a glimpse into the commercial world of the late 19th century. The album also includes a variety of natural curiosities, such as pressed flowers and leaves, cuttings of exotic birds, and postal history. Tissue souvenir handkerchiefs commemorating the Coronation of George V and the death of Edward VII are also present, adding a personal touch to the collection. The pages of this album transport us back to a time when travel was an adventure, and the world seemed a little smaller. From the grandeur of the Titanic to the wonders of far-off lands, this collection offers a glimpse into a bygone era. The scraps contained within this ledger tell the story of a man who, although his journey was cut short, still managed to capture the spirit of exploration and discovery that defined the late 19th century.
