People on a wheel at Gangtok, Sikkim, India, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, a group of people are seen intently watching as others turn the large wooden wheel at Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, India. This image is taken from an intriguing album that offers fresh insights into a little-known campaign in history: the British Tibet Expedition of 1904. Launched from India and authorized by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, this expedition was driven by concerns over Russian influence and perceived advances toward the border. The ultimate goal was to secure concessions from Tibet, which was nominally under Chinese control at the time. The expedition, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service, was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald. The photographs in this album provide a unique window into the expedition, capturing various aspects of the military, monasteries, scenic landscapes, towns, and local populations. This image, in particular, showcases the daily life of the people in Gangtok during this time. The Tibet Expedition yielded several significant concessions, but the question of whether the effort was worth the return remains a topic of debate. Regardless, this album offers a fascinating glimpse into a pivotal moment in history, providing valuable insights into the people, culture, and events of the region during this period. This album comes directly from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, who served as ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to Colonel Younghusband. The photographs offer a rare and intimate look at the expedition, providing a unique historical record that continues to captivate and intrigue scholars and history enthusiasts alike. Date: 1904.
