Romania was swiftly invaded and occupied by the German army who ruthlessly exploited the country's natural resources to aid their war effort. EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking print captures King Ferdinand I of Romania, a pivotal figure in the country's history during World War I. Published shortly after he made the bold decision to break Romania's neutrality and side with the Allies, Ferdinand faced immense challenges as his country was swiftly invaded and occupied by the German army. Despite this brutal occupation, Ferdinand remained resolute in his commitment to supporting the Allied cause. Married to Princess Marie, daughter of the Duke of Edinburgh, Ferdinand ascended to the throne upon the death of his uncle, King Carol. Throughout his reign, he navigated complex political landscapes and fought tirelessly for Romania's interests on both domestic and international fronts. The image exudes a sense of strength and determination as Ferdinand gazes confidently into the camera lens. His legacy is one of resilience and courage in times of adversity, as he led Romania through some of its most challenging moments. As we reflect on this historical moment captured in 1916, let us remember King Ferdinand I as a true leader who stood up for what he believed in and ultimately secured gains for his country at the Paris Peace conference in 1919. His reign may have ended with his death in 1927, but his impact on Romanian history lives on.
