Stanley, an American journalist and explorer, is famous for his role in the European colonization of Africa, particularly his search for the missing explorer David Livingstone and his establishment of the Congo Free State under the sponsorship of King Leopold II of Belgium. The Chieftain of Kimpoko is shown here in traditional attire, with a distinctive facial expression that conveys both authority and curiosity.
