Guan battlefield, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
Guan Battlefield: A Glimpse into the Uncharted Terrain of the 1904 Tibet Expedition This evocative photograph captures the Guan Battlefield, a pivotal site in the little-known campaign that saw a British military force, led by Colonel Francis Younghusband, brush aside Tibetan defenses to capture Lhasa in 1904. At the time, Tibet was nominally under Chinese control, but Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, was deeply concerned over increasing Russian influence and the perceived threat of their advance toward the border. The Tibet Expedition, as it came to be known, was launched from India and was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald. This fascinating album, which has been passed down through the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, an Aide-de-Camp to Colonel Younghusband, offers a unique and captivating insight into this largely uncharted chapter of history. The photographs within the album depict various elements of the expedition, from the military forces and their preparations, to the monasteries, scenic landscapes, towns, and locals they encountered along the way. The images provide a vivid account of the expedition's journey, offering a glimpse into the challenges and triumphs faced by the British military during their quest for influence in the region. The success of the expedition led to several concessions from Tibet, but the debate over whether the effort was worth the return remains open. This photograph, taken at the Guan Battlefield, stands as a testament to the courage and determination of those who embarked on this historic journey, and serves as a reminder of the complex geopolitical landscape that shaped the world over a century ago.
