Golfing at Gyantse, from a fascinating album which reveals new details on a little-known campaign in which a British military force brushed aside Tibetan defences to capture Lhasa, in 1904. The Tibet Expedition was launched from India and sanctioned by Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India, who was concerned over Russian influence and supposed advance toward the border. The expedition eventually gained a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time, but whether the effort was worth the return is certainly up for debate. This album came by direct descent from the family of Captain William Charles Hayman, ADC to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service (Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald). The photographs show various elements of the expedition: military, monasteries, scenery, towns and locals. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, titled "Golfing at Gyantse," we are transported back in time to the little-known British military campaign in Tibet, which took place in 1904. This expedition, known as the Tibet Expedition, was launched from India under the orders of Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India, who was growing increasingly concerned over Russian influence and their apparent advance toward the border. The album from which this photograph is taken is a fascinating collection of images that offer new insights into this often overlooked chapter of history. The photographs within the album depict various aspects of the expedition, including military scenes, monasteries, breathtaking scenery, and local towns. In this particular image, we see a group of British soldiers engaged in a leisurely game of golf at Gyantse, a town located in southern Tibet. The serene setting, with the snow-capped mountains in the background, starkly contrasts with the military tension that would have been present just a short distance away. Captain William Charles Hayman, who is believed to have taken this photograph, was an ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to the expedition's leader, Colonel Francis Younghusband of the Indian Political Service. Younghusband was accompanied by a strong military escort, commanded by Brigadier General James Macdonald, which helped secure a number of concessions from Tibet, nominally under Chinese control at the time. The success of the expedition and its worth are subjects of ongoing debate, but this album provides a unique and intriguing glimpse into the events of that time. The images offer a window into the lives of the soldiers, the landscapes they encountered, and the cultural differences they experienced. This photograph, in particular, serves as a reminder that even in the midst of military conflict, moments of relaxation and recreation could still be found.
