1. Title: Wind God from the House of the Patrician or Centenary (Casa di Centanario), Regio IX, Insula VIII This chromolithograph depicts the Wind God, also known as Zephyrus, from the House of the Patrician or Centenary (Casa di Centanario) in Pompeii. The image is based on an illustration by Geremia Discanno, published in Emile Presuhn's Les Plus Belles Peintures de Pompei (The Most Beautiful Paintings of Pompeii) in 1881. The chromolithograph was produced by J.G. Bach. The Wind God is shown as a youthful figure with flowing hair and a light cloak, holding a palm branch and blowing on a conch shell. His presence is symbolic of the gentle breezes that once graced the ancient Roman city of Pompeii. The image is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the Roman civilization, which has survived the test of time. The House of the Patrician or Centenary, located in Regio IX, Insula VIII, was one of the most luxurious and grandest houses in Pompeii. The mosaic and fresco decorations found within its walls are some of the finest examples of Roman art. The Wind God mosaic, which once adorned the atrium of this house, is now preserved in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. The vibrant colors and intricate details of this chromolithograph offer a glimpse into the richness and beauty of the Roman town and cityscape. The streets, houses, and public spaces depicted in the background provide a sense of the bustling urban life that once thrived in Pompeii. This image is a reminder of the enduring legacy of classical Rome and the artistic masterpieces that continue to inspire and captivate us today.
