EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: White-crested Helmetshrike (Prionops plumatus) This exquisite hand-colored steel engraving depicts the White-crested Helmetshrike (Prionops plumatus), also known as the White-plumed Shrike or Red-shouldered Cuckooshrike. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, published in Edinburgh by William Lizars in 1837. The illustration was created by the renowned naturalist and artist, William John Swainson. The White-crested Helmetshrike is a medium-sized bird native to Western Africa. The male, as depicted in this engraving, is characterized by its distinctive white crest, red shoulders, and black and white plumage. The female, on the other hand, has a brownish-gray crest and a more subdued coloration. The Helmetshrike is a member of the cuckooshrike family, which includes birds such as the Red-chested Cuckooshrike (Campephaga phoenicea) and the Crimson-rumped Waxbill (Estrildidae). These birds are named for their habit of laying their eggs in the nests of other birds, a behavior known as brood parasitism. The White-crested Helmetshrike is an insectivore, with a diet consisting mainly of caterpillars, beetles, and other invertebrates. They are known to catch their prey on the ground or in trees, using their sharp, hooked beaks to impale their victims. This beautiful engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the White-crested Helmetshrike and the rich biodiversity of Western Africa during the 19th century. It remains an important historical record of this intriguing bird species.
