EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcoloured steel engraving depicts the Lesser Bird-of-Paradise, Paradisaea minor, also known as Paradisaea smaragdina minor. The image is based on an illustration by the renowned naturalist Rene-Primevere Lesson and was produced by A. Scipp for Georg Friedrich Treitschke's Gallery of Natural History in Leipzig, Germany, in 1842. The Lesser Bird-of-Paradise is a small, vibrant bird native to New Guinea and the surrounding islands. Males are characterized by their iridescent green and blue plumage, elongated wire-like feathers on their chest, and distinctive orange-red eyes. Females, on the other hand, are brown with white underparts and have short, brown feathers on their chests. The Lesser Bird-of-Paradise is a fascinating species known for its elaborate courtship displays. Males perform a dance in front of females, raising their long, colorful feathers to create an impressive display. They also produce a loud, guttural call to attract mates. This beautiful engraving is a testament to the intricate detail and artistry of 19th-century natural history illustration. The handcoloring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, bringing the Lesser Bird-of-Paradise to life. The engraving is part of a larger collection of natural history prints from the Naturhistorischer Bildersaal des Thierreiches, which showcases a diverse range of animals from around the world. Today, the Lesser Bird-of-Paradise is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and hunting for the bird trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this remarkable bird and preserve its natural habitat.
