EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-tinted copperplate engraving, created by Corsi after Giulio Ferrario in his Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World, published in Florence in 1829, showcases a collection of significant historical figures from the Iberian Peninsula. At the center, the Tomb and effigy of El Cid Rodrigo Diaz and his wife Jimena Diaz are depicted. El Cid, a legendary Castilian hero and national icon, is shown in military attire, wearing a helmet and holding a sword. His wife, Jimena, is dressed in a flowing mantilla and skirt, typical of the Spanish nobility of the 18th century. Surrounding the central figure are various other notable individuals. To the left, the Duke of Cardona is depicted in full regalia, wearing a pointed hood and a long robe. To the right, the King of Aragon is shown in a grand suit, complete with a velvet cape and a tall hat. A young monk, dressed in a simple brown habit, is also present, as well as a disabled beggar, dressed in rags. In the background, there is a cityscape depicting the ancient walls of Toledo, the city where El Cid is buried. The engraving also includes portraits of other notable figures, such as Hernan Cortes, the famous Conquistador, who is shown wearing a majo cape and a wide-brimmed hat. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the historical fashion and social structures of the Iberian Peninsula during the 18th century. The intricate details and vibrant colors of the hand-tinted engraving add to its overall beauty and historical significance.
