EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured engraving depicts a Southern Red Muntjac (Muntiacus muntjak), also known as the Sumatran Muntjac or the Chestnut-bellied Muntjac. The Southern Red Muntjac is a small deer species native to Southeast Asia, specifically in the Indian subcontinent and the Indochina peninsula. This particular specimen was illustrated from a live animal on display at the Paris Museum, as depicted in Charles Hamilton Smith's illustration for Edward Griffiths' "The Animal Kingdom" by the renowned French naturalist, Baron Georges Cuvier. The Southern Red Muntjac is characterized by its distinctive reddish-brown coat, which is particularly noticeable on the underbelly and inner legs. Males have small, curved horns, while females do not have horns. They are agile and elusive creatures, living in dense forests and swamps, and are known to be excellent swimmers. The Southern Red Muntjac plays an important role in the ecosystem as a herbivore, feeding on various vegetation, including leaves, shoots, fruits, and bamboo. They are also an important food source for larger predators, such as tigers and leopards. The Southern Red Muntjac population has declined significantly due to habitat loss and fragmentation, hunting, and other human activities. Conservation efforts are underway to protect this species and their habitats, including the establishment of protected areas and community-based conservation programs. This beautiful handcoloured engraving serves as a reminder of the natural beauty and importance of these fascinating creatures.
