EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the chaotic and desperate retreat of the British forces following the unsuccessful Siege of Saint-Martin-de-Re in October 1627. The small island fortress of Saint-Martin-de-Re, located near the French port city of La Rochelle, had been besieged by the French army for several weeks as part of the Anglo-French War (1627-1629). The British, led by the Earl of Newcastle, had attempted to relieve the siege and reinforce the garrison, but were met with heavy resistance from the French troops. In this print, we see the British soldiers, many on horseback, in full flight from the pursuing French cavalry. The men, some wearing armor and carrying spears, are shown in various stages of disarray, with some abandoning their weapons and others urging their horses on with desperate determination. The chaos of the retreat is further highlighted by the smoke rising from the burning buildings and the chaos of the horses and men in the foreground. The failure of the relief effort at Saint-Martin-de-Re was a significant blow to the British forces, who sustained heavy losses in the battle and the subsequent retreat. The siege and retreat marked the end of the Anglo-French War, which had been sparked by the English support of the Huguenots (French Protestants) in their religious conflicts with the French Catholic monarchy. The print serves as a poignant reminder of the brutal realities of warfare in the 17th century and the human cost of military conflict.
