EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored lithograph showcases the renowned opera singer Celestine Darcier in the title role of Griselda from the opera "L'Esclave de Camoens" by Friedrich von Flotow. The image, taken from the Theatre de l'Opéra Comique production in 1843, was illustrated by Victor Dollet and published in the prestigious Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Théâtres de Paris in 1845. Celestine Darcier (1811-1875) was a celebrated French soprano, known for her exceptional vocal abilities and dramatic interpretations. In the role of Griselda, she portrayed the patient and long-suffering heroine who endures her husband's cruel tests of faithfulness. The opera, based on the Portuguese poet Camoens' "The Lusiads," was a popular success during the mid-19th century. The lithograph captures the intensity and emotion of Darcier's performance as Griselda. She is depicted with a somber expression, her hands clasped in prayer, as she stands before her husband, Don Diègue, portrayed by Hyacinthe Lemaire. The elaborate costumes and theatrical setting, designed by Alexandre Lacauchie and Louis Lasalle, add to the overall grandeur and drama of the scene. This beautiful and historic print offers a glimpse into the world of 19th-century opera and the remarkable talent of Celestine Darcier as Griselda in L'Esclave de Camoens.
