EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the last moments of the Notts strikers as they prepare for the final shift at Clifton Colliery in October 1920. The Notts strikers, also known as the Nottinghamshire Miners' Strike, began in March of that year and lasted for over six months. Thousands of miners in the Nottinghamshire Coalfield walked out in protest against wage cuts and poor working conditions. In the image, a group of weary-looking men and boys, some with their arms around each other, gather in the dimly lit colliery before the sun rises. Their faces are etched with a mixture of determination, sadness, and exhaustion as they prepare to leave the pits for the last time. The coal carts, filled with the black mineral, are lined up in the background, a reminder of the hard labor that has defined their lives for generations. The miners had voted to end the strike and return to work following a ballot held on October 28, 1920. The decision was met with controversy and resistance from some in the mining community, but the majority agreed that it was time to return to their families and their livelihoods. The end of the strike marked the beginning of a new era for the mining industry and the workers, who would soon face further challenges in the years to come. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the human cost of industrial disputes and the resilience of the working class during a time of great change. It also serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Notts strikers and their legacy in the history of the labor movement.
