EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Lord and Lady Tweeddale are surrounded by their family and an array of exotic pets at their estate, Yester Gifford, in East Lothian. The large decorative mural painting in the background, designed and built by the renowned Scottish architect and sculptor, Adam, and beautifully crafted by John Churchill, adds an enchanting backdrop to the scene. The Marchioness of Tweeddale is seen cradling Woo-Woo, a baby gibbon monkey, while her champion Golden Retriever, Beam, sits obediently by her side. The artist himself is captured in the moment, with Lady Kathleen Curzon-Herrick, a cousin and daughter of the Earl of Huntingdon, and Miss Sally Churchill, the artist's daughter, looking on. Joining them are Lady Georgina Hay with her champion Shetland Collie, Goldust; Lady Frances Hay and her pony, Foalie; Lady Daphne Hay with her dog, Flame; and the Marquess of Tweeddale with his half Labrador and retriever, Haile Selassie. In the foreground, George, a chimpanzee, playfully interacts with the children, including Miss Marianne Berry, elder daughter of Lady Helene Berry, and her brother, the Hon Lionel Berry. The exotic menagerie continues with Napoleon, a Humboldt woolly monkey, and Olive, an olive baboon, who shares the company of Herbert, a roe deer. At the top of the column, Blanche, another Humboldt woolly monkey, gazes down upon the gathering. Prodnose the hedgehog and Monk, a spaniel, complete the lively scene. This photograph, taken in 1937, offers a glimpse into the opulent and exotic world of the Tweeddale family, showcasing their unique bond with their beloved pets.
