In this striking chromolithograph from the late 19th century, we see a grand assembly at the court of Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor (1002-1024). Henry is depicted in regal attire, wearing a long, flowing robe adorned with intricate gold and silver patterns, and a jeweled crown atop his head. He is seated on a throne, surrounded by an array of courtiers and dignitaries. Standing to his right is his wife, Saint Cunigunde of Luxembourg (1003-1033), who is shown in the garb of a bishop, complete with mitre and crozier. Cunigunde was the daughter of Count Sigiboto of Luxembourg and was canonized as a saint in the Catholic Church in 1200. Her presence at the imperial court was a testament to her piety and intellectual prowess. Among the other courtiers present are Count Siboto of Falkenstein, wearing a short tunic and a cloak draped over his shoulders, and Hildegard, who is depicted in a long, flowing gown with a high neckline and a veil covering her hair. The intricate details of their costumes and the rich colors used in the illustration serve to transport us back to the 12th century and offer a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the imperial court. This beautiful chromolithograph was created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck (1811-1903), a German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. The image was taken from a manuscript housed in the Hamburg library in Munich and was part of a larger work on costumes, artworks, and appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th century. The meticulous attention to detail and the vibrant colors used in the illustration make it a valuable historical record and a work of art in its own right.
