EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative group photograph captures the momentous occasion of the christening of George Henry Hubert Lascelles, who would later become the 7th Earl of Harewood, in 1923. Surrounded by his proud parents, Viscount Henry Lascelles, 6th Earl of Harewood (father) and Lady Mary Lascelles (mother), the infant is held by his godfather, Colonel Lane Fox, as the Archbishop of York performs the ceremony. The Christening took place in the Private Chapel at Buckingham Palace in the presence of King George V and Queen Mary, with their eldest son, Prince George, Duke of Kent, also in attendance. Princess Mary, the Countess of Harewood, stands nearby, while Hon. E Lascelles and Lady Trefusis look on. The future Earl, who was born on 13th March 1923, would grow up to become a prominent figure in British society, serving as a Captain in the Grenadier Guards during World War II and later becoming a Trustee of the National Gallery. This beautiful portrait, with its formal yet warm atmosphere, offers a rare glimpse into the lives of the British royal family during a significant milestone in the life of one of its youngest members.
