EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph by Joseph Strutt, titled 'Sports and Pastimes of the People of England,' showcases three popular games enjoyed by women during the 14th century. In the foreground, a group of women play 'Hot Cockles,' a game of guessing the number of peas hidden in a handkerchief, while another woman holds a rooster. The heat from the rooster's feet is believed to help determine the winner, as the peasant women believed that the warmth would cause the peas to rise to the surface. In the middle ground, a lively game of 'Frog in the Middle' is in progress. Women stand in a circle, holding hands, while one girl jumps in the center attempting to land in an empty spot. The other women try to grab her, and if they succeed, she becomes the new 'it.' The parade of the winner of the 'Cock-throwing' game takes place in the background. A woman proudly holds a banner, while a man in the crowd throws a cudgel at a rooster perched atop a pole. The winner of the game, not depicted in the image, is the one who successfully throws the cudgel to kill the rooster. This intriguing illustration, published in 1876 by Chatto and Windus in London, provides a fascinating glimpse into the pastimes and traditions of medieval England. The detailed handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the scene, making it a captivating addition to any historical collection.
