EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, created by Giarre for Giulio Ferrario's Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World in Florence, Italy, in 1847, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, merging the worlds of engineering marvels and underwater exploration. At the heart of the image lies the iconic Eddystone Lighthouse, designed by Sir John Smeaton and completed in 1698. The lighthouse, a testament to human ingenuity, stands tall against the tumultuous sea, its white tower beaming a guiding light for sailors. In the foreground, two intrepid explorers are shown descending into the depths of the ocean in an underwater diving bell. The diving bell, a precursor to modern submersibles, was a vital tool for underwater exploration during this era. The men inside are dressed in bulky suits, their faces concealed by helmets, as they prepare to delve into the unknown. Beside the diving bell, a plan for an underwater tunnel is depicted. This ambitious engineering project, though not yet realized during Ferrario's time, demonstrates the limitless potential of human innovation. The combination of these elements – the historic Eddystone Lighthouse, the daring underwater explorers, and the visionary underwater tunnel – creates a captivating tableau that transports us back to a time when the mysteries of the deep sea held great allure and fascination.
