EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving, titled "Costumes of the Hungarians," offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditional attire of Hungarian peasants and townsfolk during the 18th century. The image, created by Giarre and Stanghi for Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," published in Florence in 1847, showcases three distinct figures: a peasant, a young farmer from Szekesfehervar, and a woman and a Catholic girl, both from Szekesfehervar and Stuhlweissenburg. The peasant, dressed in a simple yet functional outfit, wears a long, loose-fitting shirt, a heavy woolen vest, and a pair of wide-legged trousers held up by a belt. A long, woolen coat, adorned with intricate embroidery, completes his ensemble. His head is covered by a felt hat, while his feet are protected by high, laced boots. This attire was designed to withstand the harsh Hungarian climate and the demands of agricultural labor. The young farmer, in his festival garb, is dressed in a more elaborate outfit. He wears a knee-length coat, embroidered with floral motifs, over a white shirt and a pair of breeches. His vest is adorned with gold buttons and intricate embroidery. A wide-brimmed hat, topped with a rooster feather, sits atop his head, while a sash is draped around his waist. This attire reflects the pride and prosperity of the farmer, as well as his connection to the land. The woman and the Catholic girl, both from Szekesfehervar and Stuhlweissenburg, are dressed in traditional Hungarian folk costumes. The woman wears a long, flowing dress, adorned with intricate embroidery and lace. Her hair is styled in elaborate braids, and she wears a headscarf. The Catholic girl, in her Sunday best, wears a long, white dress, adorned with lace and embroidery. Her hair is styled in tight braids, and she wears a white veil. These costumes reflect the rich cultural heritage and the strong religious traditions of Hungarian society during the 18th century.
