EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning chromolithograph depicts the Christmas Orchid Hybrid, Calanthe x veitchii, a beautiful and rare orchid species. The image is taken from Harriet Stewart Miner's seminal work, "Orchids, the Royal Family of Plants," published by Lee & Shepard in Boston in 1885. Miner, an accomplished woman botanist, created the first American color plate book on orchids with this exquisite publication. The Calanthe x veitchii, also known as the Christmas Orchid, is a hybrid of two different orchid species, Calanthe triplicata and C. lutea. This hybrid was first discovered in India in 1852 and was named in honor of John Veitch, a British horticulturist. The orchid's vibrant, richly colored bracts and delicate, fragrant flowers bloom around the holiday season, hence its popular name. The chromolithograph was produced by the Hatch Company, known for their high-quality botanical illustrations. The intricate details of the Calanthe x veitchii's petals, sepals, and veins are beautifully captured in this print, showcasing the exquisite artistry of both Miner and the Hatch Company. This piece is a testament to the beauty and allure of orchids, which have long been revered as the 'royal family of plants.'
