Brodtmann Bust Ethnography Heinrich Karl Kimono Nation Pigtail Rudolf Schinz Topknot Chonmage

EDITORS COMMENTS
This lithograph, created by Karl Joseph Brodtmann for Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals in 1836, showcases the distinctive portraits of Japanese and Chinese men. The Japanese busts depict men with chonmage hairstyles, a traditional topknot worn by samurai and other high-ranking members of Japanese society. The intricately styled hairdo was often secured with a kumada, a type of hairpin, and held in place with a stiffening paste. The men in this image are also dressed in the flowing kimono robes, adding to their regal appearance. In contrast, the Chinese busts exhibit men with full beards and one with a long pigtail. The pigtail, known as a queue in English, was a symbol of submission and was required by the Chinese emperor during the Qing Dynasty. The men's beards, a common feature among Chinese men during this time, were often styled with elaborate braids and twists. This ethnographic representation of Japanese and Chinese men is a testament to the rich cultural diversity of Asia during the 19th century. The intricate details of the busts, from their hairstyles to their clothing, provide a glimpse into the lives of these distinct peoples and their unique customs. The lithograph, produced by the skilled hand of Karl Joseph Brodtmann, captures the essence of each individual's identity and contributes to the broader understanding of human history and the natural world.
