This handcoloured copperplate engraving, taken from William Smellie's translation of Count Georges Buffon's "History of the Earth and Animated Nature," published in London in 1829 by Thomas Kelly, showcases an intriguing assembly of various breeds of Canis lupus familiaris, or the domestic dog. The engraving highlights three distinct breeds: the British Bulldog, the Alco or American Dog, and the Old English Mastiff.
