EDITORS COMMENTS
Mrs Mabel St Clair Stobart: A British Heroine on the Frontlines of War and Women's Rights Mrs Mabel St Clair Stobart, as depicted on the cover of The Tatler magazine in 1915, embodies the spirit of courage, determination, and compassion that defined a generation of women during the First World War. The image of Mrs Stobart, resplendent in her riding habit and holding the reins of her horse, exudes a sense of strength and resilience that belied the challenges she faced. Mrs Stobart was a pioneering figure in the women's rights movement, founding the Womens Sick and Wounded Convoy Corps in 1912 and the Womens National Service League in 1914. Her advocacy for women's suffrage predating the war, she was a trailblazer in challenging the traditional gender roles of the time. Before the outbreak of war in 1914, Mrs Stobart tended to the sick and wounded in the Balkans. When war came, she was in Belgium and was imprisoned by the Germans. Undeterred, she escaped and made her way to Serbia to continue her work. The Tatler hailed her as an "English heroine," and her story is a testament to the indomitable spirit of women during a time of great upheaval and change. Mrs Stobart's legacy continues to inspire generations of women who have broken barriers and defied expectations, both in war and in peace.
