EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning botanical illustration depicts Mentha arvensis, commonly known as common mint or wild mint. The plant is a member of the Lamiaceae, or mint family, and the Labiatae, or mint and deadnettle family, and is native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. Mentha arvensis is an herbaceous perennial plant, growing up to 60 centimeters tall, with square stems and opposite, lanceolate leaves that are covered in fine hairs and have a distinctive purple tint. The plant is renowned for its aromatic leaves and flowers, which are used in various culinary and medicinal applications. The leaves are used to make peppermint oil, a popular flavoring agent in food and beverages, as well as in traditional medicine for the treatment of digestive issues and headaches. The illustration showcases the plant in full bloom, with its beautiful purple flowers arranged in whorls around the stem. Each flower is two-lipped, with an upper lip that is larger and curved, and a lower lip that is three-lobed. The calyx, or outer protective covering of the flower, is green and five-lobed. This illustration is part of the Botany Library Plate Collection held at the Natural History Museum in London, a valuable resource for botanical research and education. The collection contains thousands of botanical illustrations and drawings, dating back to the 16th century. This particular illustration is a testament to the intricacy and beauty of the natural world, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and studying the diverse plant life on our planet.
