EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph print captures the enigmatic and intellectual figure of Mathieu Feydeau (1616-1694), a French Jansenist divine and author, deep in thought. Feydeau was a prominent figure in the Jansenist movement, a religious and philosophical movement that emerged in the 17th century in the Netherlands and France, which emphasized the sovereignty of God's grace and the necessity of living in a state of constant repentance. Born in Paris, Feydeau studied theology at the Sorbonne and was ordained a priest in 1642. However, he soon became disillusioned with the Catholic Church and its lax moral standards, and he was drawn to the Jansenist movement, which offered a more rigorous and ascetic approach to the faith. Feydeau became a leading figure in the Jansenist community at Port-Royal, a monastery in Paris known for its strict adherence to Jansenist principles. Despite his commitment to the Jansenist cause, Feydeau faced persecution from the Catholic Church, which saw Jansenism as a threat to its authority. He was repeatedly summoned to appear before the Inquisition and was placed under house arrest for several years. Despite these challenges, Feydeau continued to write and publish works that defended Jansenist theology and criticized the Catholic Church. His most famous work, "The Interest of the Church," was published in 1688 and became a rallying cry for the Jansenist movement. Despite the controversies and persecutions that marked his career, Mathieu Feydeau remains an important figure in the history of French religious and intellectual thought. His writings continue to be studied by scholars today, and his legacy as a defender of religious freedom and individual conscience remains an inspiration to many.
