EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, young Manuel II of Portugal, future last monarch of the Kingdom of Portugal, is seen as a boy in the late 1890s. At the time, Manuel, born on November 30, 1889, was the second in line to the Portuguese throne, a position that would tragically change following the Republican Revolution of 1910. The image captures the young prince in a formal attire, wearing a navy blue jacket with gold buttons and a red sash adorned with the Portuguese coat of arms. Manuel's youthful face is framed by a thick head of curly brown hair, and he gazes intently at the camera with a serious expression. A decorative border surrounds the photograph, adorned with flowers and Portuguese flags, adding an air of royalty and grandeur. This photograph was taken before the fateful events of February 1908, when King Carlos I and Manuel's elder brother, Luis Felipe, were assassinated in Lisbon. Manuel's father's death made him the heir apparent, and he assumed the throne on December 14, 1908. However, Manuel's reign was short-lived, as the Republican Revolution in 1910 led to the abolition of the monarchy, and Manuel was exiled to Twickenham, London, where he lived until his death in 1932. The photograph is a poignant reminder of Manuel II's early years, before the tumultuous events that would shape his life and the history of Portugal. The image of the young prince, dressed in his naval uniform and adorned with decorative medals and badges, is a testament to his royal lineage and the weight of the titles and responsibilities that would soon be placed upon his shoulders.
