EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Ingestre, formerly Lady Winifred Paget, and her three daughters, Ursula, Victoria, and Joan, at a time of profound sorrow and transition. The year was 1915, and Lady Ingestre's husband, the late Viscount Ingestre, had recently passed away. He was a respected figure in society, having served as a captain in the Blues and Earl of Shrewsbury's Horse, and his memorial service was held at the prestigious Chapel Royal, St. James. Lady Ingestre, dressed in mourning attire, is seen here with her three daughters, who were born in 1907, 1910, and 1911 respectively. The eldest, Ursula, would eventually succeed to the title of Earl of Shrewsbury, making her the first female to hold the title in over 300 years. The First World War was in full swing during this period, and the aristocracy, like the rest of society, was deeply affected by the conflict. The image of a widow and her children, dressed in their finest, standing solemnly in the presence of their late husband and father, serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the enduring strength of family bonds in times of adversity.
