Lady Ingestre, formerly Lady Winifred Paget, widow of the late Lord Ingestre who died in 1915 and was a captain in the Blues. EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Winifred Paget, later known as Lady Ingestre, and two of her children during the tumultuous year of 1917. Lady Ingestre, formerly the Countess of Shrewsbury, was a prominent member of the British aristocracy, having married the late Lord Ingestre, who tragically lost his life as a captain in the Blues during the First World War in 1915. The eldest of their four children, who succeeded to the title of Earl of Shrewsbury, is seen here with his mother and younger sibling. Lady Ingestre's strength and resilience in the face of adversity were widely admired, as she had dedicated herself to various war efforts despite her own deteriorating health. The Tatler magazine reported that her health had been severely affected by the strain of her charitable work and the loss of her husband. The exact nature of Lady Ingestre's war work remains unclear, but her commitment to serving her community during this challenging time is a testament to her unwavering dedication and compassion. This poignant portrait captures a moment of quiet reflection and tenderness between a devoted mother and her children, as they face the uncertainties of a world at war.
