EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph, published by Heinrich Keller in 1883, showcases an intriguing assemblage of three helmets from the late 15th century. At the center, a distinctive kettle hat takes pride of place. This helmet, also known as a "Burgundian" or "Basque" hat, was characterized by its wide, shallow bowl and upturned brim. It offered excellent protection for the top and sides of the head, but left the face and neck exposed. To the left, a sallet helmet with a visor can be seen. This type of helmet, popular during the late medieval period, featured a rounded, domed skullcap and a hinged visor that could be lowered to protect the face. The visor could be raised to allow for better vision and communication. To the right, a visored helmet adorned with flames grabs the viewer's attention. The flames were likely added as a decorative element, rather than for any practical purpose. This helmet, with its distinctive design, would have been an effective symbol of power and status during the late medieval period. This illustration, drawn by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck and lithographed by C. Regnier, is an invaluable resource for those interested in the history of medieval costume, art, and appliances. As the director of the Bavarian National Museum from 1868 until 1886, Hefner-Alteneck was a leading figure in the field of archeology and art history. His meticulous attention to detail and commitment to preserving historical artifacts is evident in this stunning representation of these three helmets from the late 15th century.
