EDITORS COMMENTS
This detail is taken from a 19th century facsimile edition of the Chroniques, or Chronicles, by the renowned 15th century author Jean Froissart. The scene depicted here is the arrest of Charles II of Navarre, which occurred on April 5, 1356, in the castle of John II of France in Rouen. During the Hundred Years War between England and France, Charles II, also known as 'The Bad' or 'The Soldier King,' had allied himself with the English. In an attempt to weaken the English forces, John II of France ordered the arrest of Charles II, who was visiting Rouen under a false promise of safe conduct. The image shows a group of men, including knights and soldiers, gathered inside the castle, surrounding a man in the center, believed to be Charles II. His hands are bound behind his back, signifying his capture. The interior of the castle is depicted in rich detail, with intricate stonework, tapestries, and banners adorning the walls. The vertical composition of the image, with its focus on the central figure, adds to the dramatic tension of the scene. This lithograph, created in the 19th century, is a faithful reproduction of the original manuscript, providing a glimpse into the past and the intricate details of medieval castle interiors and the political intrigue of the Hundred Years War.
