EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the distinguished visage of Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk, in the year 1904. Born on December 27, 1847, the Duke was styled Baron Maltravers until 1856 and Earl of Arundel and Surrey between 1856 and 1860. He later became a British Conservative politician and philanthropist, serving as Postmaster General from 1895 to 1900. However, the Duke is best remembered for his extensive philanthropic work, which focused primarily on Roman Catholic causes and the city of Sheffield. In this image, taken at the time of his second marriage to the Hon. Gwendolen Constable Maxwell, who was thirty years his junior, the Duke cuts an imposing figure with his full beard and regal attire. The couple went on to have four children together. The Duke's aristocratic lineage can be traced back to the 13th century, making him one of the most ancient and prominent figures in British history. His noble title, "Duke of Norfolk," is a testament to his long and storied ancestry. This portrait, with its rich historical context and intriguing subject matter, offers a captivating glimpse into the world of the British aristocracy at the turn of the 20th century.
