EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 13th-century print depicts Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, also known as Saint Elisabeth of Thuringia or Saint Ville, as she is depicted in the Bardi Chapel at the Church of Santa Croce in Florence. Dated between 1207 and 1231, this masterpiece of Gothic art showcases the pious queen in a moment of deep contemplation and prayer. Born in 1207 in Transylvania, Elizabeth was the daughter of King Andrew II of Hungary and Gertrude of Merania. She was married to Landgrave Louis IV of Thuringia at the age of 14 and is remembered for her exceptional charitable works and devotion to the poor. After her husband's death in 1227, Elizabeth dedicated her life to caring for the sick and the needy, often disguising herself to distribute alms and food to the destitute. In this print, Elizabeth is shown sitting on a stone bench, her hands folded in her lap, and her eyes closed in prayer. She wears a simple white tunic and a red mantle, symbolizing her royal status and her martyrdom. A halo surrounds her head, signifying her sainthood, and roses, the emblem of the Holy Virgin, are scattered at her feet. The intricate Gothic arch in the background adds to the overall grandeur and beauty of the composition. The Bardi Chapel, where this print is housed, is a testament to the rich artistic heritage of the Church of Santa Croce in Florence. The chapel, built between 1225 and 1260, is renowned for its collection of frescoes and sculptures, which include works by some of the most famous artists of the time, such as Giotto and Cimabue. This print of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is a precious reminder of the pious queen's enduring legacy and the artistic brilliance of the period.
