EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts Elasmotherium, an extinct genus of giant rhinoceros native to Asia during the Pliocene and Pleistocene epochs. Measuring up to 5 meters in length and weighing several tons, Elasmotherium was one of the largest rhinoceros species ever to have existed. Its distinctive features include a long, curved and hooked horn on its snout, and two smaller horns above its eyes. Heinrich Harder, a renowned German landscape artist and book illustrator, created this exquisite illustration as part of his seminal work "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," published in Hamburg in 1916. Harder's meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of color bring Elasmotherium to life in this print. Elasmotherium roamed the vast grasslands and forests of Asia during the late Ice Age, coexisting with other prehistoric creatures such as mammoths, saber-toothed tigers, and woolly rhinoceroses. The cause of its extinction remains a subject of ongoing debate among scientists, with theories ranging from climate change to human hunting. This stunning illustration serves as a reminder of the rich diversity of life that once inhabited our planet and the importance of preserving the natural world for future generations. Harder's work continues to inspire and captivate audiences, offering a glimpse into the fascinating world of prehistoric animals and the history of our planet.
