EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts a Dinoceratid, a fascinating extinct herbivorous creature hailing from the Eocene epoch, around 50 million years ago. Belonging to the order Dinocerata, this rhinoceros-like being showcases several distinct features that set it apart from its modern-day counterparts. The Dinoceratid is identified by its robust, stocky build and the presence of paired horns and tusks. The two prominent horns, one above each eye, were likely used for defense against predators. The tusks, located below the mouth, served multiple purposes - they could be used for digging up roots and vegetation, as well as for defense and display. The Dinoceratid's body was covered in thick, protective skin, and it had a large, barrel-shaped body with powerful, sturdy legs. Its hooves, similar to those of modern-day rhinos, allowed it to traverse various terrains with ease. This illustration is the work of Heinrich Harder, a renowned German artist, from his seminal work, "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," published in 1916 in Hamburg. Harder's meticulous attention to detail and vivid color palette bring the Dinoceratid to life, offering us a glimpse into the rich and diverse world of prehistoric creatures.
