Our Day in London, October 1918

Four photographs reporting on activities across London during Our Day, an event organised to raise funds for the Red Cross. In Trafalgar Square, as pictured, there was a camouflage fair where a diminutive pony collector showed off specimens, munition girls sold Red Cross parachutes in faithfully recreated trenches, Lady Sybil Grant (daughter of Lord Rosebery) tried out a bioscope and George Robey auctioned a pig called Daisy which had been donated by the allotment holders of Wandsworth, although The Sketch reports it was donated by The Queen?! Date: 1918

EDITORS COMMENTS
Our Day in London, October 1918: A Snapshot of Charitable Activities Amidst the Backdrop of the First World War This evocative photograph captures the spirit of community and resilience during the tumultuous year of 1918, as Londoners came together for 'Our Day,' an extraordinary fundraising event organized to support the British Red Cross. The image, taken in the heart of Trafalgar Square, showcases a medley of engaging activities that brought joy and unity to the city amidst the ongoing hardships of the First World War. At the forefront of the scene, a diminutive pony collector proudly displays his specimens, drawing the curiosity of onlookers. Nearby, munition girls sell Red Cross parachutes from faithfully recreated trenches, their determination and patriotism on full display. In the background, Lady Sybil Grant, the esteemed daughter of the former Prime Minister, Lord Rosebery, tries her hand at a bioscope, her elegant silhouette a stark contrast to the war-torn surroundings. The excitement reaches a crescendo as George Robey, a renowned comedian and actor, auctions off a pig named Daisy. According to The Sketch, the pig was donated by the allotment holders of Wandsworth. However, some reports suggest that the pig was, in fact, donated by none other than the Queen herself, adding an even more enchanting layer to this historical moment. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the indomitable spirit of Londoners during the First World War, as they came together to support the Red Cross and raise much-needed funds for the war effort. The image encapsulates the essence of community, resilience, and hope, making it an invaluable piece of historical documentation.
