Cunard Wharf, Boston Harbour, 1902: A Historic Hub of Transatlantic Travel This evocative photograph captures Cunard Wharf in Boston Harbour at the dawn of a new era in travel. Owned by the esteemed Cunard Line Company, this waterfront site holds a rich history in transatlantic maritime tradition. In 1839, Cunard was awarded the first British Trans Atlantic steamship mail contract, marking the beginning of their dominance in the industry. From 1909 to 1929, Cunard held the coveted 'Blue Riband' for the fastest Trans Atlantic crossings, with their iconic ships, the Mauretania and Lusitania, leading the way. The sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, off the coast of Ireland, tragically caused the United States to enter World War I. Cunard's legacy extends beyond the Trans Atlantic crossings. They were also responsible for building two of the most luxurious ocean liners in history: the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth (QE), launched in 1936 and 1938, respectively. These floating palaces epitomized the glamour and sophistication of ocean travel in the 1930s and 1940s. This photograph, taken in 1902, offers a glimpse into the past, showcasing the bustling activity at Cunard Wharf as passengers embarked on their voyages to the Old World. The image is a testament to the enduring allure of the sea and the spirit of adventure that defined the era.
