1673 1727 Baron Cecil Countess Jones Margaret Ranelagh Stawell

EDITORS COMMENTS
This elegant portrait captures Margaret, Countess of Ranelagh, a woman of great beauty and distinction in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born Margaret Cecil in 1673, she was the daughter of the 2nd Earl of Exeter and Lady Anne Cavendish. Margaret's life was marked by two significant marriages. Her first husband was John Baron Stawell, with whom she had five children between 1692 and 1696. Tragically, Stawell died in 1696, leaving Margaret a young widow. Several years later, in 1701, Margaret married Richard Jones, who was later created Earl of Ranelagh in 1711. This marriage brought her into the orbit of the powerful and influential Jones family, who were prominent figures in English politics and society. Margaret's striking appearance is evident in this portrait, which showcases her elegant features, fashionable attire, and refined demeanor. The artist, unknown to us, has skillfully captured the countess's expressive eyes, which seem to convey a sense of intelligence and depth. The intricate lace collar and cuffs, as well as the delicate embroidery on her gown, are testament to the high fashion of the time. Despite the many challenges that Margaret faced in her life, including widowhood and the complexities of courtly life, she remained a gracious and respected figure. Her marriage to Richard Jones brought her continued influence and status, and she was known for her generosity and patronage of the arts. Margaret, Countess of Ranelagh, remains an intriguing and captivating figure in the history of the English aristocracy, and this portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a woman who defied the expectations of her time.
