EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite illustration showcases the stunning Ceropegia candelabrum, a remarkable plant belonging to the Asclepiadaceae or Milkweed family, as depicted in the historic Hortus Indicus Malabaricus (1678-1703) by Hendrik Adriaan van Rheede tot Drakenstein. The Hortus Indicus Malabaricus, also known as the "Great Herbals of India," is an essential botanical work that documents over 700 plant species native to the Malabar Coast of India. The illustration, created during the 17th century, beautifully captures the intricate details of the Ceropegia candelabrum's unique flowers. This eudicot, angiosperm, and member of the Gentianales order, is characterized by its distinctive inflorescence, which resembles a candelabra. The plant's bell-shaped flowers, arranged on long, curved peduncles, are suspended from the inflorescence, creating an impressive display. Carl Linnaeus, the renowned Swedish botanist, later described and classified the Ceropegia candelabrum in 1753, assigning it the scientific name Apocynum candelabrum under the Linnaean system. However, it is now placed within the subfamily Asclepiadoideae and the genus Ceropegia. The plant's scientific name was later corrected to Ceropegia candelabrum by John Lindley in 1835. This illustration serves as a testament to the rich botanical knowledge of the 18th century and the remarkable discoveries made during this period. The Ceropegia candelabrum continues to intrigue botanists and plant enthusiasts alike with its distinctive beauty and unique features.
