As he recounts his experiences to his colleague, he is met with stern glances and hushed whispers, as those around him furtively point to the 'Keep Quiet' notices that hung prominently in the trenches. Despite his innocent words, the fear of German ears listening in was ever-present, leading Cartoon to hastily return to the safety of the trenches. The contrast between the quiet, somber trench life and the vibrant civilian world is starkly illustrated in this cartoon from 1916.
