1509 1564 Calvin Calvinism Etching Founder Reformer Theologian Aisa
EDITORS COMMENTS
John Calvin (1509-1564), a French theologian and reformer, is depicted in this etching. Born in Noyon, France, Calvin studied law at the University of Paris before turning to theology. His religious beliefs were deeply influenced by the humanist ideas of the time, as well as his own personal experiences of spiritual turmoil. Calvin's theological ideas, which came to be known as Calvinism, were a significant force in the Protestant Reformation. He is perhaps best known for his doctrine of predestination, which holds that God has already determined who will be saved and who will be damned. This belief, along with Calvin's emphasis on the authority of the Bible and the importance of good works, set Calvinism apart from other Protestant denominations. Calvin's most famous work, "The Institutes of the Christian Religion," was published in 1536 and quickly became a foundational text for the Reformation. Calvin also played a key role in the establishment of the Genevan Reformation, serving as the city's spiritual leader from 1541 until his death in 1564. Calvin's influence extended far beyond Geneva, however, and his ideas spread throughout Europe and beyond. Calvinism became the dominant form of Protestantism in Scotland, England, and the Netherlands, and it continues to be practiced by millions of Christians around the world today. This etching, created in the late 19th or early 20th century, provides a visual representation of Calvin as a pious and intellectual figure, with his hands folded in prayer and a serious expression on his face. The image serves as a reminder of Calvin's enduring impact on Western religious history and the legacy of the Protestant Reformation.
