Cephalopod Cephalopoda Chamber Internal Mollusc Mollusca Mollusk Nautilida Nautilidae Nautilus Shell Spiral Study Woodward Invertebrata

EDITORS COMMENTS
This watercolor quartet, created by Alice B. Woodward around 1880, showcases the intricate anatomy of the Aturia sp. nautilus, an enigmatic invertebrate belonging to the Cephalopoda class and the Nautilida order. The first two drawings (1 and 2) present the animal sans its iconic spiral shell, revealing the soft, elongated body and the numerous arms adorned with suckers. The third drawing (3) offers a cross-sectional perspective, unveiling the complex internal structure of the nautilus' chambered shell. Lastly, the fourth illustration (4) provides an apical view, revealing the open end of the shell with its intricate siphuncle, which plays a crucial role in the animal's buoyancy control. Alice B. Woodward, a prolific natural history illustrator, meticulously captured the essence of this ancient marine creature during the height of the Victorian era, between 1862 and 1951. Her watercolors not only serve as a testament to her artistic prowess but also provide invaluable insights into the anatomy and morphology of the Aturia sp. nautilus. This series of illustrations invites us to explore the wonders of the natural world and the intricacies of the cephalopodan mollusk, the nautilus.
