Pershing, had been training in France since June 1917, and the St. Mihiel Offensive, also known as the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, was their first major battle as part of the Allied forces. The soldiers, dressed in their field uniforms and wearing helmets, are seen pulling a heavy tin filled with munitions, while their horses, also outfitted for the rigors of war, wait patiently nearby.
