EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Margaret Beaufort, Countess of Richmond and Derby (1443-1509), a woman of remarkable intellect, ambition, and influence during the tumultuous late medieval period. Daughter of the Earl of Somerset, Margaret was married at the age of thirteen to Edmund Tudor, 1st Earl of Richmond, with whom she had one son, Henry Tudor, who would later become King Henry VII of England. Margaret's life was marked by tragedy and political intrigue. She was widowed at a young age and spent many years in exile in France, where she became a patron of scholars and artists, and founded the College of Montaigu in Angers. Upon her return to England in 1485, following Henry Tudor's victory at the Battle of Bosworth, she played a crucial role in securing her son's claim to the throne. As a devoted mother and shrewd political strategist, Margaret supported her son's reign and helped establish the Tudor dynasty. She also continued her patronage of learning, founding St John's College, Cambridge, in 1511, and supporting the establishment of the first English printing press in Westminster in 1476. This image of Margaret, dressed in rich robes and wearing a crown, conveys her regal presence and her status as a powerful and influential figure in Tudor history. The intricate detail of her headdress and the delicate folds of her clothing suggest the skill of the artist and the high quality of the materials used in the original print. Margaret's intense gaze and the subtle expression of determination on her face add to the sense of strength and resilience that characterized her life and legacy.
